Born in Lübeck, he studied piano with Günter Ludwig and David Levine and conducting with Volker Wangenheim at the conservatoires in Cologne and Düsseldorf, from which he graduated with distinction.

As one of the most prominent conductors and composers of his generation, Michel Tabachnik was the Music Director for the Brussels Phiharmonic until June 2015, and continues today as their Conductor Emeritus.
